Special to The Record
Florida School of the Arts recently bid farewell to 46 graduates now on their way to pursue careers in art galleries, on the stage or behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. Many will continue their education at universities before finding their niche in the arts. The college honored the students who received their associate degrees in the visual and performing arts at the St. Johns River State College Palatka campus.
The commencement address was given by photographer John Sevigny, whose works have been exhibited in the United States, Mexico and Portugal. Sevigny has worked as a photographer and writer for international news organizations including the Associated Press. His news photographs have appeared in The New York Times, the Montreal Mirror and People.
Sevigny advised the graduates on the "selflessness of art" and the importance of creating art in the spirit of giving. He encouraged the graduates to become social servants, emanating their creations as if "lighting a candle in a dark, cynical world, not shining a spotlight on yourself."
