Comment: We shouldn't begrudge India aid

The government's decision to give 1 billion of aid to India over the next three years has sparked much controversy, but as Michael Hesseltine says, we need to ask ourselves: ?what sort of country do we want to be?'

By Richard Evans

Hesseltine asked that question in response to an angry audience member on ?Question Time' who demanded to know why the UK has pledged 280 million a year to a country with a ?WITH A SPACE PROGRAMME'. That bit has to be shouted, apparently.

It's an understandable line of questioning and if my only source of information on the subject was this article from the Daily Mail I'd be pretty angry about it too. On my journey into work on Tuesday I watched two commuters tutting almost in synch as they read that India has ?three times as many billionaires as we do'. (The instinctual reaction to 90% of Daily Mail articles is either to tut, pull your hair out, throw something at a foreigner or to stop eating whatever you're eating because you just found out it will probably give you cancer.)

India having three times as many billionaires as us is a nice sound-byte for the press to use but it becomes less impressive when you think that the population of India is more than nineteen times that of the UK and its 1.1 billion people equates to more than 17% of the world's total population. It becomes less impressive still when you take into account the mathematical skills of the Daily Mail staff who, in the same article, reveal that there are actually 69 billionaires in India and 29 in Britain. I was never great at maths in school but I understand 29 multiplied by three is actually 87, not 69. So in fact the amount of billionaires in India is closer to double than triple. Some interesting rounding-up. Do I spot an agenda perhaps?

India is a country of two extremes, that much is true. It is the world's eleventh largest economy, boasts a 1.25 billion SPACE PROGRAMME and is itself an aid donor to other countries. However, India is also host to a third of the world's poor. The Indian government undoubtedly has to take responsibility for the extremely high levels of poverty and for it to be focusing on aspirations such as launching into space while back on planet earth millions of its people are starving is a decision of catastrophic proportions. Thankfully it is now starting to realise this and is cutting budgets in areas such as defence to focus on issues closer to home - or at least on this planet.

Should erroneous government spending in the past mean that impoverished people in India continue to suffer? Shouldn't we be trying to help those people? Because that's exactly what the government is trying to do with this pledge. This money isn't going to the Indian government, it is being split up and sent to three of the poorest states - Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar - to help people out of poverty.

Andrew Mitchell, the UK secretary for international development says: "Some people - in both the UK and India - have been asking whether the time has come to end British aid to India. In my view, we are not there yet.

"The whole rationale for my department is, eventually, to work ourselves out of a job. But having discussed this with the government of India, I believe that, for the next few years, it is in both India's interest and in Britain's interest for us to continue our highly successful collaboration on development, not least so we can support the government of India's own successful programmes in the poorest priority areas.

"They do have a space programme, but on the other hand there are more poor people in India than in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa, and the average income of an Indian citizen is only one-third of that of a Chinese person."

There will be plenty of people who will disagree with this decision and I can understand those arguments. We are still in the midst of a recession and the cutbacks are hitting us hard, which is why aid to the likes of China and Russia has already been stopped, but the fact is, do we want to be the sort of country that doesn't share - albeit what little resources we have - with those in greater need?

While the UK is slipping down the global financial superpower rankings it is acts such as this one that show we are still a superpower when it comes to prestige, status and acting responsibly.

Streep sang Abba songs on movie set

The Hollywood veteran takes the role of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in upcoming film Iron Lady, opposite Grant as politician Michael Heseltine.

And the Withnail & I star got a taste of Streep's fun side when she serenaded him with the Swedish band's hits.

He tells the Daily Mail, "We were doing a scene in which Mrs. Thatcher walks down a corridor with a group of ministers. Between shots, Meryl, still suited and bewigged as Mrs. T, sang the Abba hits.

"It was so incongruous and hilarious and it sums up her humour and sense of mischief. It's naff (cliched) to say it, but Meryl makes you feel better about yourself."

Streep showed off her vocal skills in the 2008 movie version of the hit ABBA stage musical.

Wiz Khalifa Plays Bamboozle Fest, Denies Feud With Kanye

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey ? Wiz Khalifa is riding high ? pun not intended, even though it kind of works ? off the success of his debut album, "Rolling Papers," and a stage show that is quickly garnering a lot of praise. But Wiz can't seem to escape the gossip that doggedly follows him and girlfriend Amber Rose around.

Rumor has it that Wiz confronted Kanye West over a jab West took at Rose during his show-stealing set at Coachella. During his performance of "Stronger," West slightly altered the lyrics from "I'll do anything for a blonde dike and she'll do anything for the limelight/ We'll do anything when the time's right" to "I did anything for a blonde dike and she did anything for the limelight/ And we did anything when the time's right."

An altercation allegedly occurred after West's performance, but when MTV News caught up with Wiz before his set at this weekend's Bamboozle Festival, he said the entire backstage incident was fabricated.

"I did my set and we hung around for a bit, but we weren't even there when fam was onstage," Wiz said. "Somebody made that up. I think they just wanted it to be that type of situation or they wanted to see something go down. It's fun to talk about it and make jokes about, but in all reality, that didn't even exist."

Wiz said he did hear Kanye's lyrics though. He thought it was a low moment, that many people who look up to West may have been turned off by his lyrical alteration. He harbors no ill will, however.

"It is what it is, and I'm doing my business and she's doing her business and he's doing his business and that's what it is. I'm all about positivity and I'm going to keep it that way."

Wiz kept things moving, co-headlining Bamboozle Friday night along with 30 Seconds to Mars. Wiz is currently on the College Consciousness Tour with fellow Steel City native Mac Miller, and he plans to head out with the Motor City's own Big Sean next month for the Rolling Papers tour. But he's happy to perform wherever his fans ? or soon-to-be-fans ? may be.

"I think my crowd, they kind of just go everywhere and wherever I'm at. I kind of just entertain them as well as make new fans. Some of the people that come to my shows, they just know me for one or two songs, so even the people that don't know me at all at shows like Bamboozle, I get to make them new fans."

Winstone has no regrets about turning down The Wire

The Sexy Beast star has revealed he was asked to join the cast of the cop show, set in Baltimore, Maryland, but rejected a role when he realised he would have to move to America during filming.

He tells the Daily Mirror, "Maybe if I was a young man, I'd think about moving to America... I was offered a part in The Wire years ago, and it's probably a good thing I never did it because it turned out to be a fantastic series and I probably would have ruined it.

"The reason for that was my girls (daughters) were a certain age and at school and I'd have had to be in Baltimore for seven months. There's nothing wrong with Baltimore but I wouldn't see my kids and it was the wrong time for me. I've no regrets at all."

The rise of ?infotainment' and its nemesis, ?this isn't news'

Yahoo! News Editor Sat Jan 08 07:00AM

By Richard Evans

"This isn't news". Those three words haunt me. I have seen them at least twenty times a day for the past three-and-a-half years. I've even started seeing them in my nightmares, splattered on my walls in Internet blood.

Tuesday was a typical example; we ran a story about David and Victoria Beckham's son, Romeo, being named as one of Britain's best dressed men by GQ magazine. We ran this in our ?Oddly Enough' section based on the fact it's strange for an eight-year-old boy to be considered a fashion icon, even stranger when you consider that he probably doesn't dress himself, and most obviously of all - he's not a man either.

On Twitter the words were there again. They'd followed me from the comment section of articles onto social media. My tweet was commented on or re-tweeted ten times. Of those ten, two commentators were unhappy at my decision to post the link. I can be callous like that sometimes if truth be told.

?WHO GIVES A FLYING F***????' and ?U SUCK' were the highlights of one response. While another tried to goad me into early retirement: ?And is this what u call news? Thinking about retirement? Go 4it'.

While I don't normally give much credence to people who write all in capitals or use phrases such as ?go 4it' when they have enough space to write ?go for it' I felt the need to defend myself in this instance. Perhaps it's because those words have been constantly nailed into my brain and I've finally snapped or perhaps it's because I want some of our readers to understand why we run certain stories.

First of all, why should we care what some magazine thinks? We shouldn't necessarily, but the fact is that some publications have carved themselves into authoritative figures in their industries. Forbes magazine is held in high esteem in the financial world, likewise with Which? in the consumer market and so too with GQ on matters of men's fashion. Let me put it this way, we won't be running any stories on what Heat magazine thinks about Sienna Miller's tan lines any time soon but if National Geographic runs a story about a new jungle being discovered, we're interested.

To the criticism of ?this isn't news'. There are two types of news, there?s hard news and there's light news. If readers were pumped full of hard news every day we'd be a nation of very solemn individuals, I can promise you that. That's why it's important to run videos of a deer being rescued or of a man pretending to be a superhero occasionally. Think of it as a morale boost. Of course it's important to run hard news stories too, and they take priority without fail, but without the light stories to balance it out we'd all go crazy.

The rise of ?infotainment' shouldn't be a surprise to anyone by now, it's been steadily progressing in the mainstream media for the last decade or more. Audiences often complain at the dumbing down of news, whether it be online, print or broadcast, but the fact is news outlets just got better at understanding what stories people are more likely to engage with and that's any information organisation's ultimate goal. Simply put, more people watch, click, listen to lighter news than they do with hard news, so media companies started to deliver more of them. A simple case of supply and demand. Infotainment will never replace hard news but it will always be there like a useful sidekick.

The ?this isn't news' army is a tiny proportion of readers, and I'm talking across all publications not just Yahoo!. The behaviour of people who comment on news articles is generally negative, if people are happy with something they usually don't feel the need to say anything. That's just the way we are.

If you don't think a story is newsworthy then don't read it. There is an endless supply of what you may call real news stories. All you have to do is look.

Can Kristen Wiig Turn on the Charm?

Kristen Wiig shows up seven minutes into the movie ?Knocked Up,? an assassin in a junior executive?s suit, meeting with the television production assistant played by Katherine Heigl, who their boss has decided is ready to go on the air. Wiig?s character is every middle manager who clings to her authority by association; she shows her boss small reassuring smiles while revealing subterranean loathing toward the young woman with the promotion. She tells Heigl?s character that they cannot legally ask her to lose weight. ?We would just like it if you go home and step on a scale and write down how much you weigh,? she says. ?And subtract it by, like, 20.? ?Knocked Up? is a movie filled with slapstick, screaming and shtick, and yet Wiig, with nothing more than her small, tight smile and death-by-platitude lines, practically stole the show with that two-minute scene. ?After I saw how much people loved it in the movie,? says Judd Apatow, who wrote and directed the film, ?I instantly asked her if she had any plans to write a script for herself.?

Wiig doesn?t exactly fit the mold of a traditional leading lady ? she is more like America?s eccentric aunt than its sweetheart ? but she was, in fact, working on a screenplay starring herself when Apatow asked. ?Bridesmaids,? which she was writing with her best friend, Annie Mumolo, is a comedy about the friendship between two women: one planning her own wedding while the other, the single girl played by Wiig, is on a steady downhill slide. After Wiig?s character melts down in a key scene, her best friend, played by Maya Rudolph, shouts, ?Why can?t you just be happy for me and then go home and talk behind my back like a normal person??

The kinds of characters Wiig has perfected on ?Saturday Night Live? ? carefully observed, idiosyncratic and, yes, occasionally annoying ? have served her well in the scenes she has stolen in other films: as an oddball surgeon in ?Ghost Town,? an oddball yoga instructor in ?Forgetting Sarah Marshall,? an oddball theme-park owner in ?Adventureland,? an oddball crime fighter in ?MacGruber.? But could that sensibility carry a whole movie? Apatow decided to take the chance, hoping to marry Wiig?s sharp sense of character and fascination with minute human details to the broad, bawdy set pieces and fail-safe physical comedy he is known for. The film, one of the better-reviewed movies at the South by Southwest festival this spring, plainly shows the commercially successful hand of Apatow, but it also reveals that Wiig can be as funny in the role of a relatable everywoman as she can in those absurdist characters. Watching the movie, you do not have the sense of Wiig as a comedian stretching to take on a big role on the big screen; she seems more like an actress who has been trapped in the successful career of a comedian.

In person, Kristen Wiig comes off as a little nervous. When we met, she was wearing a black wool cap that hid most of her dark blond hair, giving her the same anonymity that sunglasses would, and she was worrying about the restaurant she chose. She had never been there before ? what if it were weird? She seemed to reconsider every statement shortly after making it. Did she just say she could draw? Just a little ? it?s not as if she thinks she is some great artist. Talking about ?Bridesmaids,? she said, ?It?s my first . . . starring role, I guess, is the term?? as if owning up to an embarrassing disease. ?And it is a comedy, and comedy is very subjective, and yeah, I?m nervous.? Once again, she autocorrected: ?But in a good way.?

She is not explosively anxious, or neurotic and hyperverbal, like many of her best-known characters on ?Saturday Night Live?; all that energy seems tamped down into a more controlled cautiousness. She is unfailingly reserved and polite.

Wiig, who started on ?Saturday Night Live? in 2005, quickly established herself with characters like the Target Lady, a gung-ho checkout clerk with boundary issues and an unplaceable accent. Many of Wiig?s characters are embarrassingly enthusiastic about something: a surprise party or the physical appeal of a love interest (in one sketch, Wiig plays a local newswoman awkwardly hitting on her female interview subject). Their unchecked excitement ? the raw wanting ? makes the characters painfully nervous; and the combination of emotions bumping up against one another makes for comedy. The roles she invents are ?always smiling on the outside and dying on the inside,? says Paul Feig, who is best known as the creator of ?Freaks and Geeks? and who directed Wiig in ?Bridesmaids.?

So much of what we think of as the comedic impulse comes from a performer?s neediness ? the need to be the center of attention, no matter what humiliation it requires. Wiig manages to be a scene-stealer whose attention seems focused outward, on the small-time weirdos of the world whose mannerisms she adopts and then builds on, finding their humanity and their specificity. No one can point to someone who is, in fact, just like the Target Lady ? and yet there is something instantly, almost eerily recognizable about her.

The character was inspired by a few words Wiig actually did exchange with a clerk at a Los Angeles Target ? ?just the accent, nothing she actually said,? Wiig says. Other creations have sprung from as little as a facial expression or a gesture. Gilly, a fiendish Orphan Annie with intent to kill, was what Wiig and her co-writers attached to a pulled-back smile Wiig thought was goofy enough to merit a character. A 1920s character who keeps telling her friends not to make her sing ? none of them, in fact, have asked her to ? evolved when something about the way Wiig was dramatically hunching her shoulders inspired her co-writers to start riffing.

Wiig is clearly a darling of Lorne Michaels; she seems to be featured in more sketches than any other performer on any given episode. Asked to rank Wiig among the show?s top performers, Michaels did not hesitate. ?Top three or four,? he says (lest anyone need reminding, the group?s alums include John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Will Ferrell, Mike Myers and Dan Aykroyd). He also appreciates her quiet containment, so different from her bravado on camera. ?An old shrink of mine would say she doesn?t ?spill over,? ? Michaels says. ?There are people who I have worked with ? and quite a few people I?ve worked with ? who are always in some state of crisis: their boyfriend left, their agent is lying. What I?m getting at is she?s ?still waters run deep.? ?

Wiig is a more polarizing figure for viewers: they either love Gilly, with her mischievous mugging and her ?Sor-ry? catchphrase, or find her excruciating. (Some small subsection of viewers have started a Facebook group called Kristen Wiig Is NOT Funny. ?That Gilly skit makes me want to punch a baby,? one member rants.) And many of her characters are, by their nature, annoying, like Penelope, a hair-twirling nudge who one-ups everyone with a trailing voice and a steady patter of increasingly surreal tall tales.

Simon Cowell Says ?Good Chance? Paula Abdul Joining ?The X Factor?

FIRST PUBLISHED: April 25, 2011 11:00 AM EDT

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

The speculation concerning the judges on FOX?s upcoming ?The X Factor? continues!

In an interview with Deadline?s Nikki Finke, Simon gushed about his desire to work alongside his former ?American Idol? pal, Paula Abdul, on his new series.

?I?ve always wanted Paula. Always been very vocal about that. I missed her the second she left the show. Always loved working with her even though she can be a pain. And I?ve been consistent about this. I don?t know what it is about her, but I?ve always clicked with her. You just have to get that chemistry, and she?s right,? Simon said. ?I?ve never found anyone better than her. I think there?s a good chance it will be her. We?ve agreed that we would meet as many people as possible, and now we?re reaching the deadline we?ve got to make the decision soon. But I think she?s got a really good shot.?

Despite his enthusiasm for Paula, a rep for Simon told Access that nothing was decided.

?It?s still playing out,? his rep said in a statement to Access on Monday. ?Nothing is set, and Paula is one of many people Simon is talking to. He?s said the same thing many times, including on the radio last week. There?s nothing new.?

Simon also expressed his support for Cheryl Cole, the British singer who was a judge on the UK version of ?The X Factor.?

?I never think about it as an American or British audience. I genuinely don?t. I think that?s what?s happened on a lot of these shows now is it?s almost like you?ve got to hire well known celebrities to be a judge. And with Cheryl, when I hired her initially, I?d only met her literally once when I offered her the job on [British] ?X Factor.? I thought she was bright, cute, knew what she was talking about, ambitious. And you meet someone special a few times in your life? and this girl is special. She?s just got a great ability to communicate. She?s a great judge. She?s smart. It?s just a hunch. If people take to her like the British public did, I think she?s going to do really well in America. And Fox was desperate to hire her,? Simon said in the interview with Deadline.

A source added, ?She?s pretty much a shoo-in for the show.?

A rep for FOX told Access Hollywood they had ?no comment.?

Former record label executive L.A. Reid was previously announced as the first judge to sit beside Simon on the FOX reality competition set to debut this fall.

Casey Abrams Feels 'Really Good' About His 'American Idol' Exit

When Casey Abrams ended up standing next to Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery on "American Idol" on Thursday night, he had a feeling the end was nigh. Then, when Lusk was sent to safety, well, that was all she wrote.

"Everyone was just so incredible [on Wednesday night]. ... My performance was pretty good, but seeing Jacob kill it and then seeing Haley kill it, seeing Scotty and Lauren kill it and Durbin obviously ... it just made me feel like, 'These guys are incredible. These guys could carry the show. I don't really need to be here, so if I go home tomorrow, I'm prepared,' " he said of the thoughts going through his head after Wednesday night's Carole King performance show.

But, facing a deluge of questions about the status of his relationship with frequent duet buddy (and reported offscreen paramour) Haley Reinhart during a call with reporters on Friday morning (April 29), Abrams made sure to clear up the most important bit of business about the rest of his career first, saying that the moment the two shared at the end of his final performance on Thursday night was unplanned and not a sign of anything other than good times. "I was saying goodbye to my very special musical friend," he explained of their eye-lock, emphasizing that they are not, and never were, a couple.

Abrams said he was "feeling really good, actually" about things on Friday morning and that he never really got too upset about the results. "I felt really good even afterwards. Maybe I'll break down crying some other time. But right now, I feel really good about what happened last night."

In his typical fashion, Abrams went out with a bang, not only having his "Haley moment," but also kissing audience members and the judges and rolling around onstage. "What was going through my mind was just, 'Make this good,' " he said of his jubilant goodbye. "I was completely on random mode. I didn't plan on ending up on Haley; it just happened that way. Nothing was planned."

Though we saw him play acoustic and electric bass, piano, guitar and melodica on the show, Abrams revealed that he also dabbles in drums, sitar, accordion, cello and clarinet. When it comes to how he might corral all that prodigious instrumental talent into a live show, he said it would likely bear the title, "Pure Craziness" and encompass everything from hard rock to smooth jazz, much like his first post-"Idol" album.

With a number of shaky vocal performances over the course of his tenure on the show, Casey said that, even with his long background in studying and playing music, being on "Idol" has done a lot for his confidence as a performer. "Everything. It's done every single thing," he said. "I used to not like to sing in public, and now I feel like I'm singing a little bit too much. Now I'll sing in the hallways with random people I don't even know. Maybe that's a bad thing, but I just feel a lot more comfortable onstage, and I feel like I can do anything onstage now."

Although the judges and mentor Jimmy Iovine had warned Casey to dial back the growling and scowling after his take on Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the singer had fallen back into his old ways in recent weeks, begging the question of whether he was purposely ignoring their counsel. "It is kind of how I sing when I don't think about it," he explained. "I think that's a good place to be when you don't think about how you sing. ... It's a gray area. It's hard to define what's a good growl and what's a bad growl."

Like other contestants who have benefited from the judges' save in the past, Abrams said he felt the pressure of having the panel bail him out and dedicated himself to working even harder because it would have been "really embarrassing" to go home the very next week. That said, Abrams admitted he never expected to get as far as he did, or win, and feels pretty great about making it to the top six.

Asked for his final thoughts, Abrams said simply, "Don't take yourself too seriously. Take music seriously, but not yourself."

It was such an incredible honour to be asked, and I am so proud of what we and the Alexander McQueen team have created. I am delighted that the dress represents the best of British craftsmanship.

"Alexander McQueen's designs are all about bringing contrasts together to create startling and beautiful clothes and I hope that by marrying traditional fabrics and lacework, with a modern structure and design we have created a beautiful dress for Catherine on her wedding day.

"The last few months have been very exciting and an incredible experience for my team and I as we have worked closely with Catherine to create this dress under conditions of the strictest secrecy. Understandably, Catherine has been very keen to keep the details of her dress a secret, which is every bride's prerogative, and we gave an undertaking to keep our role confidential until the day of the wedding.

"Catherine looked absolutely stunning today, and the team at Alexander McQueen are very proud of what we have created. The dress was just one component of a spectacular day, and I do not think it is appropriate to comment any further beyond saying that I personally am very grateful and honoured to have been given the opportunity to work on this project, and I wish TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge every good wish for the future."

Burton, 36, took over the British fashion label after designer Alexander McQueen committed suicide in February 2010. A retrospective of looks from the famed fashion house will be on display at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning Wednesday; the exhibit officially opens Monday night during the star-studded Met Costume Institute Gala.

Bamboozle Festival Will Be 'Insanity,' 30 Seconds To Mars Say

You'd think, given the worldwide tour in support of their This Is War album, that 30 Seconds to Mars would have logged at least a half-dozen New York City-area shows by this point. But you'd be wrong: To date, they've played exactly one NYC concert (an April 21, 2010, gig at Roseland Ballroom), which is just part of the reason they're looking forward to Friday night's (April 29) headlining slot at the Bamboozle Festival in nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey.

"Bamboozle is going to be insanity. I mean, insanity," frontman Jared Leto told MTV News during Thursday night's "30 Seconds to Mars: State of the Union" live stream. "We've only played one New York City-area show in this record cycle, so I think it's going to be madness."

30STM will share the weekend with an assortment of artists, including Lil Wayne, Bruno Mars, Wiz Khalifa, Mtley Cre, Taking Back Sunday and the Gaslight Anthem, to name just a half-dozen. And, to hear 30 Seconds to Mars tell it, that's half the fun. Sure, they've been playing to sold-out arenas of their own fans for more than a year now, but nothing compares to the thrill &#8212 and the challenge &#8212 of trying to win over an audience of other people's fans.

"Nothing can really beat your own show, but festivals are really great too," guitarist Tomo Milicevic said. "At festivals, you play in front of other fans too."

The 2011 Bamboozle Festival takes over the New Meadowlands Stadium parking lot in East Rutherford, New Jersey, all weekend. MTV News will be on hand to bring you all the madness!

Which act would you most like to see at Bamboozle? Let us know in the comments!
