Fellini exhibit probes celebrity, paparazzi culture - CBC.ca

Decades before Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, the world had Anita Ekberg.

The Swedish actress shocked the public with her racy behaviour, manipulated the press into following her every move and, perhaps most importantly, inspired Federico Fellini, who cast her in his 1960 classic La Dolce Vita. The scandalous starlet instantly gained screen icon status.

Their collaboration is one of the many subjects explored in Fellini: Spectacular Obsessions, a summer exhibit by TIFF, opening Thursday.

Opening with a motion-detecting mural that turns visitors into paparazzi-fodder, the show surveys the Italian filmmaking legend's career and his explorations of celebrity culture, fame, scandal, artifice and fantasy.

The former caricaturist-turned-filmmaker was a sponge, soaking up the lively, romantic movie culture that thrived in Rome during the 1960s, a time when Hollywood and its stars flocked to the city.

"Any celebrity you can name found their way to the Via Veneto," Noah Cowan, artistic director of TIFF Bell Lightbox, told CBC News. "And what happens when you have a lot of stars in one place? You have a lot of celebrity photographers, of course. You also have a lot of bad behaviour"

Fellini is credited with coining the term "paparazzi," after he named La Dolce Vita's celebrity-chasing photographer Paparazzo. The filmmaker was a keen observer of celebrity culture, also depicted in his latter masterpiece, 8 .

Fellini "provided us with a very sophisticated frame with which to view [celebrity culture] and a very prescient one. He understood where our culture was moving and provided a really playful, but oddly scholarly lens with which to view it," Cowan said.

"Now, something that seems obscene without context or something that seems nearly obscene when it crops up ? like Jersey Shore ? actually becomes eminently understandable when one watches a Fellini film."

Cowan compares the infamous MTV reality show about crass, vacationing Italian-American youth to Fellini's early neorealist film I Vitelloni, which involves "a bunch of ruffian young boys and how they behave on the streets of Italy."

"[Fellini] puts it through this context of art and culture and the history of visual arts," he said, helping us comprehend "the excesses of the culture around us."

Celebrity central

The Toronto exhibit recreates Rome's famous avenue Via Veneto ? a noted celebrity hangout in Fellini's time ? in neon, plywood and scaffolding. In the 1960s, the city was the "cheapest place to make movies in the world," Cowan said, and drew stars from around the globe.

'All the great art cinema of the post-war period is becoming less well known here [and] there's a certain militancy we feel about reminding people of the importance of these films and filmmakers'? Noah Cowan

Photos, archival newspapers and magazines, news reels and video footage recreate the era, including one of its biggest tabloid scandals ? and the inspiration for a key scene in La Dolce Vita.

During a party at the Italian restaurant Rugantino, Swedish actress Ekberg decided to heat things up by kicking offer her shoes, hiking up her skirt and delivering a sultry dance performance for her fellow trattoria patrons. An unknown Turkish dancer ? unwilling to be outdone by the Swede ? followed with a public striptease, with photos of the raunchy evening plastered onto the next day's newspapers.

Soon enough, the woman dubbed La Turque publicly pledged her repentance, Cowan said.

"The media loved the entire circus of it. The celebrity track of bad behaviour, followed by religious repentance, has now become a rather standard issue formula, but this was the first time we really saw that happen."

Paparazzi partnership

One wall of the exhibit is devoted to covers of Ekberg, the buxom former model-turned-actress and master media manipulator who became known for her strategic use of scandalous behaviour. She staged faux skirmishes with the photographers hounding her or purposely cavorted, partially clothed, in the Trevi Fountain ? all to her advantage.

Although the partnership between actors and the paparazzi was cordial at first, the former's opinion of the latter soon turned to frustration and then violence. The Lightbox exhibit includes Marcello Geppetti's inspired image of Italian actor Franco Nero in the process of thrashing paparazzo Rino Barillari, prominently on display above a red, 1953 Moto Guzzi motorbike that was favoured by the insistent photographers as well as Fellini himself.

An annex to the show also explores two of the period's most influential photographers: Geppetti, whose celebrity snaps include the infamous shot confirming an affair between Elizabeth Taylor and her Cleopatra co-star Richard Burton (she was married to Eddie Fisher at the time, he to movie producer Sybil Williams), and Arturo Zavattini, whose backstage access to La Dolce Vita made him a pioneer of on-set photography.

Other sections of Spectacular Obsessions delve into Fellini's regular collaborators, his use of music in his films and his Book of Dreams ? in which he chronicled his vivid and colourful imaginings as per his psychotherapist's recommendations.

The Fellini exhibit was "jammed" when it debuted in Paris and also well-attended in other cities where it has toured (including Bologna, Madrid, Barcelona and Moscow), Cowan said. It has been somewhat redesigned for its display at TIFF Bell Lightbox with the goal to recreate the show in a North American context, he added.

"As it was first put forward, it was a less defined experience and more immersive right away. It also dealt with material that we either don't have access to or it just isn't very well known here," like Fellini's television work that aired in France and Italy, he said.

"All the great art cinema of the post-war period is becoming less well known here [and] there's a certain militancy we feel about reminding people of the importance of these films and filmmakers. We absolutely redesigned the show to make it as accessible as possible for people who are interested in Fellini and interested in how he might affect our culture today."

Fellini: Spectacular Obsessions runs to Sept. 18.

Is the land of Catherine Zeta Jones and Katherine Jenkins really the UK's ...

Katherine Jenkins

Beauty and relationship experts across Waleshave dismissed a global dating website whose members branded the Welsh as the ugliest people in Britain.

A mere 11% of Welsh men and 12% of women who have applied to exclusive site Beautiful People have been accepted to become members ? less than both England and Scotland.

But beauty and relationships experts in Wales have fought back, rubbishing the claim and pointing to iconic showbiz figures spawned from this country who disprove the theory.

Hollywood actors Richard Burton and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and singer Katherine Jenkins were name- dropped as great ambassadors of Welsh aesthetic appeal.

Passion, culture and language were also listed as reasons why Welsh people have an intrinsic appeal.

British TV presenter and fashion journalist Lowri Turner said: ?If they?re looking for ugly people, what about Essex, not Wales. I nominate Katherine Jenkins and her boyfriend to be as proof that Welsh people can be fantastic-looking. ?

Beautiful People has a global dating community of five million members and is described as ?an elite online club, where every member works the door?.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

People seeking membership are asked to submit a photo of themselves, upon which current members will rate their beauty. Applicants will only be accepted if a majority of members consider them beautiful over a 48-hour period.

The Scandinavian countries of Norway and Sweden, home of model Victoria Silvstedt, boast the most beautiful people, according to the site.

Paula Abbandonato has been the organiser of the Miss Wales competition for the past seven years.

Dismissing the figures, the 42-year-old from Lisvane in Cardiff said: ?Maybe the Welsh are so gorgeous that they?re all snapped up already and they don?t need these dating websites.

?We?re going to win Miss World this year, so that will put them all straight.?

Ms Abbandonato said Welsh people were good at utilising the ?80-20 rule? to make the most of their looks.

Explaining the concept, she said: ?It?s all about the 80% you do with the 20% you have got. It?s only about the 20% you?re born with and the rest is making the best with the hand that you have been dealt.

?That?s very liberating for a lot of people who don?t think highly of themselves. It means that everybody has got the potential to look good.?

Ms Abbandonato singled out Catherine Zeta-Jones as an iconic Welsh beauty.

Victoria Silvstedt

?She?s wonderfully gorgeous. I think you can see she plays the 80-20 rule really well. ?She?s just a traditional, timeless beauty.?

University of Glamorgan senior lecturer Henry Enos has previously studied the use of websites in dating. Offering hope to Welsh singletons, Dr Enos said: ?In other data the Welsh have been shown as the most passionate, and Welsh men are considered quite virile.

?But, come on, we have got Hollywood greats such as Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Burton.?

Naomi Roberts has been the South Wales branch coordinator of a UK-wide ?romance academy? for teenagers since 2006. The project discusses relationship issues with teenagers from the age of 14 to 18.

Ms Roberts said: ?I have travelled around the place quite a bit and Welsh people are definitely renowned for their friendly hospitality and kindness. They are also great fun and fun-loving ? and bursting with an amazing culture which is to die for.?

Richard Burton

Spokeswoman for Beautiful People Felicity Hardingham said Welsh people may be disadvantaged on the site by submitting photos of themselves with groups of friends.

She said: ?This means they are likely to be judged based on the attractiveness of their friends rather than just themselves. They also appear smaller in the image so members cannot get a good idea of what they really look like.

?On the other hand, Scottish men often strike a pose which may seem moody or aggressive. We think this is why Englishmen have a higher chance of being accepted.

?Overall, we noticed that countries with an outdoor, sunny lifestyle do really well. This may be because they are more likely to be tanned and physically fit.?

Flitting between French and English, Prince William gave his first official remarks since arriving in Canada.

"It will improve as we go on," the newlywed prince joked of his French, and noted how much he and Kate wanted to learn about the country that's providing them their first royal tour.

"Catherine and I are so delighted to be here in Canada. Instilled in us by our parents and grandparents, who love this country, we have been looking forward to this moment for a very long time ? and before we were married, we had a longing to come here together," he said.

"The geography of Canada is unsurpassed and is famous for being matched only by the hospitality of its people. We are so very excited about having this opportunity to experience both ? and learn much more about this amazing country."

William, 29, was speaking at the official welcome event at the residence of the governor general of Canada, Ottawa's Rideau Hall.

Minutes earlier, the couple had received a reception from a crowd several thousand-strong near to the national war memorial where they had laid a wreath. People stretched forward, handing Kate bouquets and gifts.

The crowd shouted for both members of the royal couple, but seemed to favor one, with shouts of "We want Kate!"

"Thank you so much. We are so delighted to be here," she said. Occasionally she looked over to her husband on the other side of the crowd to make sure she was moving at an appropriate pace.

Jennifer Baldwin, 19, drove for 21 hours from her home in Bloomington, Ill., and stood out on the street starting at 5:30 a.m. for a glimpse of the couple.

"I talked to William and congratulated him on the wedding and he said 'thank you very much', he's so polite!" she told reporters. "It was completely worth the journey just for that five seconds. I mean, I shook his hand!"

At the war memorial, the William laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior that remembers more than 116,000 Canadians, especially those without graves.

Kate pate placed a small posey at the memorial and warmly greeted the woman who had handed it to her, Mabel Girouard, whose son Bobby was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in 2006.

As she waited for her husband to finish his walkabout, Kate chatted with the Prime Minister and his wife saying, "That was so amazing, there were so many people there ? How many do you think? We have been on the go since 7:30 this morning so it's been a long day."

As the couple got into their official car, Kate was seen leaning on William's shoulder and grinning broadly.

Lloyds Bank To Axe Another 15,000 Jobs

Lloyds has announced plans to cut another 15,000 jobs as part of a review aimed at saving 1.5bn a year.

As exclusively revealed by Sky City editor Mark Kleinman , the jobs will go over the next three years.

The latest announcement means a total of 43,000 jobs will have gone at the 41% state-owned bank since its merger with HBOS in January 2009.

The savings will come from fewer management posts, centralising some functions and withdrawing from more than 15 of its overseas units, the bank said in a statement.

The majority of job losses are expected in the UK, with 90% of the banking group's operations based here.

The bank will also look to attract more wealthy customers in Britain by expanding its wealth business.

Lloyds Banking Group has 3,000 branches, 22 million current accounts and 27% of gross mortgage lending.

It has 30 million customers and is the nation's biggest mortgage lender.

The strategic review was launched by the bank's new chief executive, Antonio Horta-Osorio, who left Santander UK to run Lloyds on March 1.

He said the bank will become a "simpler, more agile and responsive organisation".

But he added: "We have to do this. This bank has lost money, it's losing money this year on an after-tax basis.

"We have to get this bank back on to its feet to support the UK economy and we have to pay taxpayers' money back."

Around 28,000 jobs have already been lost since the group was formed when Lloyds TSB and HBOS merged early in 2009, so the new cuts will be a further blow to staff.

Earlier this month, Lloyds began the sale of 632 of its branches and a large part of its mortgage operations after being ordered to offload them by the European Commission.

The Unite union said the results of the review would cause "deep distress and anxiety" across the company.

"Astonishingly one in eight roles will be lost over the next three years," national officer David Fleming said.

"This review is merely another box-ticking exercise to give this bank, which has already, since its creation two years ago cut over 27,000 staff, an excuse to sack more employees.

"The conclusion of this review to make 15,000 staff cuts is yet another extreme example of the financial services industry cutting vital staff in a desperate attempt to create a mirage of acceptability following the financial crisis.

"But this total failure to take significant action to make appropriate changes to rebuild the public confidence in the sector is deplorable."

The Game -- Armed Thugs Hit Music Video Set

The Game's new music video shoot with Chris Brown got gangsta -- for real -- when a producer was held up at gunpoint ... losing more than $12,000 in cash and jewelry ... TMZ has learned.

0629_the_game_EX

Law enforcement sources tell us the armed robbery went down Tuesday in South Los Angeles -- and the producer was sitting in his car with another person when 2 black male suspects walked up, pulled out a gun and demanded the goods. They made off in a gray Nissan Altima.

Sources on the music video shoot say the producer -- named Mars -- had walked about a block from the set when it happened. We're told the suspects took his jewelry and his wallet ... which was stuffed with a couple thousand bucks.

Chris Brown and The Game were on set at the time of the robbery, but were not near Mars.

A rep for Game said nobody on set saw the incident go down -- and that everyone on set usually has security when they walk around.

Celebrity news and birthdays - News Sentinel

Mag imagines Princess Di at 50 years old

NEW YORK ? The latest Newsweek cover contains a ghostly sight: a computer-generated image of a stylish Princess Diana walking with Kate Middleton.

The article inside was written by Diana biographer and longtime provocateur Tina Brown. She's also Newsweek's editor-in-chief.

Diana was killed in a car accident in 1997 and would have turned 50 on Friday. In April, Middleton married Prince William, the oldest son of Diana and Prince Charles.

?What would she have been like?? Brown writes of Diana. ?Still great-looking: that's a given.? About the cover, a Los Angeles Times headline had a different question Tuesday: ?Shocking, brilliant or just plain cheap??

America Ferrera, boyfriend wed

NEW YORK ? America Ferrera is a married lady.

People magazine's website says the 27-year-old ?Ugly Betty? star and longtime boyfriend Ryan Piers Williams were wed Monday night in ?an intimate setting? with close friends and family in attendance.

A representative for Ferrera confirmed the report Tuesday.

Ferrera won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Betty Suarez on ABC's ?Ugly Betty.?

The couple met at the University of Southern California when Williams cast her in his student film. They became engaged last year.

Judge orders Sheen wages docked

LOS ANGELES ? A judge has ordered Charlie Sheen's former bosses to garnish $55,000 a month for child support from any payments they make to the former ?Two and a Half Men? star.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Hank Goldberg on Friday approved a request by Brooke Mueller Sheen to garnish any payments Warner Bros. Television makes to her ex-husband.

The former couple was divorced May 2, about two months after Warner Bros. fired Sheen from ?Men.? The actor and the studio have been fighting over payments ever since.

The hefty monthly payments are intended to support the Sheens' twin sons and were part of a divorce settlement they reached earlier this year.

Lady Gaga sued over fundraising

DETROIT ? Lady Gaga's spokeswoman says a lawsuit accusing the music star of misleading fans with an online pitch for donations to victims of the Japan quake is meritless.

Lady Gaga's website is selling $5 wristbands that say, ?We Pray For Japan.? The website also allows people to make additional donations and says ?all proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts.?

A lawsuit filed in Detroit notes that sales tax and a $3.99 shipping charge are added. Detroit-area attorney Alyson Oliver believes not all money is going to help the Japanese and she wants an accounting.

Lady Gaga's spokeswoman, Holly Shakoor, said Tuesday that no profit is being made on shipping costs. She says $5 from each wristband is going to Japan. The lawsuit seeks refunds for people who bought the wristbands.

Gibson's divorce nearly finalized

LOS ANGELES ? An attorney for Mel Gibson's estranged wife says the former couple has nearly finalized their divorce.

Attorney Laura Wasser told a judge Tuesday that the pair have resolved all their issues and are doing some ?final polishes? on the paperwork.

Wasser says the couple should have a judgment ready by Aug. 30. Gibson's attorney agreed with Wasser's assessment

Robyn Gibson filed for divorce in April 2009, just months before the Oscar winner's then-girlfriend gave birth to an infant daughter. He indicated in court filings that the couple separated in 2006.

No details of how the couple's assets will be divided was discussed Tuesday, and Wasser indicated those details would remain private. The former couple have seven children together, but only one who is under age 18.

Time Out for June 29, 2011

So let?s say the dog days of summer are truly here.

Sports have all but vanished. No more College World Series. No basketball. No hockey. You can?t see football season without a telescope.

Basically, for the next month, you?ve got baseball ... and that?s it. Unless you want to count Women?s World Cup, which, quite frankly, is a step I?m not ready to take.

In other words, at first glance, you might say we?re starving for sports.

I say that?s pure baloney.

After all, the Fourth of July is a mere five days away. And when the Fourth of July comes, everything?s a sport.

??First of all, celebrations are naturally competitive. And automatically, I win.

I was born in Ottawa, so I?m allowed to celebrate two holidays this week ? Independence Day and Canada Day, which happens July 1. It?s almost the same as the Fourth, but with a different flag and milder weather. Still, it?s a really big deal.

I know, our traditions are a little weird, and yes, one day, we?ll apologize for Justin Bieber. Until then, please remember that we brought you the great game of basketball. That?s right: James Naismith was Canadian.

We also brought you curling, hockey fights, great donuts, Kim Cattrall, Elisha Cuthbert, Shania Twain, Natasha Henstridge and Rachel McAdams.

You?re welcome.

As for the Fourth ...

??Fireworks become a sport.

Shia LaBeouf Compares 'Transformers' Gals Megan Fox, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Unless you've been living under a rock and/or have avoided all news related to "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," you're likely well aware that there was much ado about actress Megan Fox leaving the franchise and, subsequently, being replaced with model/first-time actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

With the film in theaters this week, fans have moved beyond guessing about the circumstances that led to the alleged firing and hiring of Fox and Whiteley, respectively, and turned their attention to another pressing question: How are the two characters addressed in the film? Specifically, how does one gorgeous girlfriend exit to leave room for a new one? And while we know this is a summer movie full of fantasy, is it really believable that a guy like Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) could wind up with the likes of Mikaela Banes (Fox) and Carly (Whiteley)?

MTV News went straight to the source and enlisted LaBeouf and Whiteley to explain the appeal and attraction of their characters, Sam and Carly, and to compare the "Dark of the Moon" relationship to the one between Sam and Mikaela, established in the first two installments.

"The relationship the first time was a person chasing after a woman that he envied out of pure vanity," LaBeouf told us. "He didn't even know her, and he gets burned by it," he added, hinting at a "Dark of the Moon" where his character admits to being flat-out dumped by girlfriend #1.

"[In this film], you find him with a woman who's more nurturing, who has a more maternal-type vibe; she's lighter," LaBeouf explained. "You went from a biker-machine-shop chick, which is a totally different sentiment, to a woman who's fresh out of college working for the British embassy as a diplomatic aide, it's a very different personality."

LaBeouf also revealed that before Whiteley was cast, he suggested to director Michael Bay that they go for a girl who was the exact opposite of Megan Fox's Mikaela. "I remember pitching to Mike, 'Maybe we should go with a more bookish type,' " he recalled.

"Mike said to me ? and there's two faces to this that are hilarious and insane and also genius, so three sides. I remember him saying to me, 'Shia, we're not going with any bookish anything. This is a summer movie ? we need a summer girl.' To his credit, Mike really understands his audience. There's a certain audience that goes to see these movies that has certain requirements that it needs out of its summer movies."

From Whiteley's perspective, her character sees something different in Sam than Mikaela did.

"She is so in love with him. He as a character, he's so funny, Sam, and he has such a great family in the movies," she said. "As the movie goes on, it kind of unfolds that she's had a hard time with her family. She's worked really hard, she's come from England. I think she finds him and he's the first person who adores her, as he should, and she loves that he adores her and they have this really lovely relationship," she explained. "It's a sweet thing. Shia was great to play that with of course."

Banks' owner is suing Ross -- claiming 3 pitbulls escaped from Rick's mansion in Atlanta back in April ... entered her property and ferociously attacked her tiny pet Yorkshire Terrier.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, the yorkie suffered "3 large bite wounds on his back " along with a "very large bite wound" around his neck.

Cops were called to the scene -- and officials managed to free Banks ... but his wounds were so extreme, that the owner had no choice but to euthanize her beloved companion.

Investigators eventually cited Ross for the incident -- but the owner wasn't satisfied so she filed suit, demanding Ross fork over $15,000 in damages and court costs.

We're told the owner is especially upset because Ross has NOT apologized for the incident.

Calls and emails to Rick's camp have not been returned.

'Everything fine' ahead of Monaco wedding (AFP)

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) ? South African Olympic swimmer Ryk Neethling told local media Wednesday that "everything is fine" ahead of Charlene Wittstock's marriage to Monaco's Prince Albert II, despite rumours of cold feet.

Neethling, a gold medalist friend of Wittstock's who is attending the wedding Friday and Saturday, said he phoned to check on her after South Africa's Times newspaper called him to confirm rumours that she had tried to leave Monaco.

"I just spoke to her assistant and whatever the story is, it's not true. I'll be very surprised if it's true. I called her and asked if everything is okay, and they said everything is fine," he told the paper.

Neethling said he was still flying to Monaco for the wedding.

Monaco's royal palace Tuesday angrily denied an online report by French magazine L'Express that said Wittstock had interrupted her wedding preparations and tried to take a flight home a week ago.

Jeff Bridges revives music career with new album (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Add Jeff Bridges to the long list of Hollywood actors who fancy themselves rock stars.

He convincingly played a washed-up country singer in "Crazy Heart," winning an Oscar last year. In real life, Bridges is just as credible promoting his first album for a major label.

He took the stage at the Troubadour nightclub in Los Angeles on Tuesday to perform an hourlong set of folk-oriented material drawn mostly from his self-titled release, due out August 16 through Blue Note Records.

"This is surreal, man," he said. "This is very rewind."

Indeed, the 61-year-old actor is no newbie on the music scene, and the album is no vanity project. He recalled that the last time he played the hallowed venue was during a "hootenanny" in his early teens.

He went on to collaborate with film composer Quincy Jones, who introduced him at Tuesday's industry showcase and described the young Bridges as "stone Haight-Ashbury," a reference to the then-prevailing hippie scene.

While Hollywood beckoned in the form of a breakthrough role in the 1971 film "The Last Picture Show," Bridges found an outlet for his musical talents in such films as 1989's "The Fabulous Baker Boys." He also recorded an album, "Be Here Soon," for an independent label in 2001.

His turn in "Crazy Heart" as whiskey-swilling Bad Blake brought him a whole new level of musical recognition. The producer of that film's soundtrack, his long-time friend T-Bone Burnett, also produced the new album. Bridges wrote two of the album's 10 tracks himself.

He appeared to be having fun on stage, at one point treating the crowd to a funny anecdote about filming "Heaven's Gate" as he tried to tune his guitar before giving up and handing it to his roadie.

Backed by a four-man band, and alternating between an acoustic and electric guitar, Bridges played a mix of songs from the new album and from the "Crazy Heart" soundtrack. Some were funereal, like the new "Slow Boat." Others were more rockabilly like the "Crazy Heart" tune "Somebody Else."

"I wish my mom and dad could be here tonight," he said, referring to late acting couple Dorothy and Lloyd Bridges. "They would have dug this a lot."

But he had plenty of support from his family, including his wife of 34 years Sue, to whom he dedicated a cover of Bob Dylan's love song "The Man in Me," and elder brother Beau. Hollywood stars in the crowd included Pierce Brosnan, Ryan Reynolds and Olivia Wilde.

"Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera marries (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? "Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera has married longtime boyfriend Ryan Piers Williams, a representative for the actress said on Tuesday.

Ferrera and Williams were married on Monday night in a ceremony attended by Vanessa Williams and Rebecca Romjin, who are former co-stars from the ABC comedy, said the actress' spokeswoman Carrie Byalick.

"Ugly Betty" ran from 2006 to 2010, and since then the 27 year-old Ferrera has played a recurring role on CBS drama "The Good Wife."

Williams is a filmmaker who directed "The Dry Land," an independent film released last year that starred Ferrera.

Jennifer Aniston On Her Pre-Teen Figure & Her Early Days As A Very Bad Waitress

FIRST PUBLISHED: June 14, 2011 4:15 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Jennifer Aniston is known for her trim figure, but she admitted she was a chubby pre-teen when opening up to Marie Claire?s July issue about her first acting job.

?When I was 12, I asked him if I could get a part on his show. I wore a yellow skating outfit, and I was kinda large,? Jennifer said of the costume she wore on dad John Aniston?s then-soap ?Search for Tomorrow.? ?It?s hard to look good in yellow, and I certainly did not.?

Bitten by the acting bug, Jennifer said she waitressed to make ends meet as she got older, before her super-success with ?Friends.?

Unfortunately for many patrons of her food establishment, Jennifer was a bad food server.

?I dropped more than one Alpine burger in customers? laps, and you just do not want all of that Swiss cheese and mushrooms in your pants. I wasn?t a good waitress, but I was told that I was very nice and charming, so people liked me anyway,? she told the mag.

The actress, who hits the big screen on July 8 in ?Horrible Bosses,? alongside Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day, said she eventually moved to Los Angeles after New York proved to be a tough market.

?I was struggling a little in New York, working as a waitress at Jackson Hole but not really getting any consistent acting work. Then I moved out here to Los Angeles, and I started getting pilots and working pretty regularly,? she said.

While she?s happy in her current job, Jennifer admitted she would have stayed in a creative discipline if acting hadn?t worked out.

?If I weren?t an actor; I?d be: Maybe an interior designer. I love seeing a house and thinking about how it should be redone or restored,? she said. ?I spent a lot of time doing my current house, and it?s beautiful. It?s like a beautiful work of art, and I?m very proud of it.?
