'Politeness' Caused Segway Boss' Death Plunge

A multimillionaire who was killed after falling off a cliff while riding his Segway scooter may have died trying to carry out an act of courtesy.

Jimi Heselden died while walking his dog above the river Wharfe near Boston Spa in September last year.

A dog walker told the inquest he saw Mr Heselden move backwards at the top of a steep incline, in order to allow him to pass.

Sean Christie said he saw Mr Heselden wobble, then disappear.

He then found the businessman in the river below.

Mr Heselden had bought the European licence for the Segway, as well as running Hesco Bastion, a company which provides containers to protect troops.

The inquest was told Camp Bastion, which is home to British troops in Afghanistan, was named after his firm.

Coroner David Hinchliff recorded a verdict of accidental death.

"I think it's probable - I think typical of Jimi and the type of man he was - he held back and waited as an act of courtesy to allow Mr Christie more room," he said.

"In so doing, he's attempted to reverse the Segway back. As a result of that he's got into difficulty."
