Celebrity: The Donald's trump card - San Francisco Chronicle

The idea of Donald Trump moving into the White House seems as weird as the man's hair. Yet this self-impressed bully is currently topping Republican polls.

Trump is a hit among the 48 percent of Iowa Republicans who don't think Barack Obama is an American. He appeals to libertarians who resent paying for a social safety net that they imagine supports nothing but lazy slum dwellers and brown-skinned immigrants.

They love Trump's in-your-face swagger, because it is like their own.

A campaign built on birthers, immigrant bashers and miserly safety net shredders might be enough to win a congressional campaign in Kansas, but it doesn't seem like a winning combination in a national race.

Still, there's another healthy percentage of American voters who know nothing about politics but are immersed in the details of our celebrity culture. Perhaps the Donald could fashion a grand coalition of those whose political ideas are loony and those who have no political ideas at all.

That could easily be more than half the country.

Just because something seems preposterous does not mean it is impossible. Imagine, then, President Trump and a trophy first lady redecorating the White House in garish casino gold.
