Caesarean Births To Be Allowed On Request

Women are to be allowed to have their baby by caesarean section, even if they have no medical reason for the operation.

Controversial new guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) say women should be allowed to have a C-section as long as they have first been counselled about the risks.

Previous guidelines warned that "maternal request" was not an acceptable reason for a caesarean.

But the increasing safety of the procedure in recent years has led some obstetricians to relax the rules.

The watchdoginsists that its new advice reflects current practice and will not mean every woman is offered a caesarean.

Deputy chief executive Dr Gillian Leng said: "This guideline is not about giving free caesareans for all on the NHS.

"It is about ensuring that women give birth in the way that is most appropriate for them and their babies."

Obstetrician Malcolm Griffiths, who chaired the panel that wrote the guidelines, said most women want a natural delivery, not surgery.

"Caesarean section is a major operation - it's about as major as a hysterectomy," he said.

Women take longer to recover from a caesarean than a straightforward natural birth, and it can have implications for future pregnancies.

Currently one in four births is by caesarean. Between a third and a half are planned, usually because of medical reasons.

Nice believes the new guidelines will result in fewer women having the operation because those with a fear of childbirth will be offered mental health intervention to ease their anxiety.

But Tracey Johnston, clinical director of maternity services at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, disagreed and warned the guidelines will have an impact on hospitals.

"There is no doubt that the extra caesarean sections will put pressure on theatre time, on ward space because the women stay in hospital longer, and it's more expensive so it is a pull on resources."

A planned caesarean costs around 2,369 - around 700 more on average than a natural delivery.

The Royal College of Midwives said it was "inappropriate" for caesareans to be offered without good medical reasons.

It warned that a shortage of midwives at a time of a rise in complex births was already putting maternity services under strain.

Mum Rhonda McDougall said the new guidelines were long overdue.

She had to battle the medical profession to have her baby Alyssa delivered surgically, and finally got her way with the help of information from the Elective Caesarean website.

She said: "I did not want to be treated like an idiot hormonal woman, being told: 'This is how it works and this is what you were made for, so just do it.'

"I was informed. I came across the website and knew the pros and cons and that was my choice. At the end of the day it is my body."

Hundreds Hurt In Deadly Clashes In Cairo

At least one person has been killed and 676 people injured in clashes in Cairo after riot police stormed Tahrir Square to clear a protest camp, officials said.

Officers fired rubber bullets, tear gas and beat demonstrators with batons in the Egyptian capital.

Hundreds of protesters fought back, hurling stones and setting an armoured police vehicle ablaze.

The violence spilled into surrounding side streets in downtown Cairo. At least 18 people were reportedly arrested.

The camp had been set up to commemorate hundreds of demonstrators killed in the 18-day uprising that ousted president Hosni Mubarak in February.

The square had been a focal point for the anti-regime protests earlier in the year and activists were trying to restart a long-term sit-in, said witnesses.

"The people want to topple the regime," shouted enraged crowds, reviving the chant from the early days of the uprising.

Crowds also screamed: "Riot police are thugs and thieves" and "Down with the Marshal," referring to Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's military ruler.

The black-clad police were a hated symbol of Mubarak's regime and the latest violence happened just nine days before Egypt's first post-Mubarak parliamentary elections.

On Friday, tens of thousands of Islamists and young activists had massed in the square to protest against Egypt's ruling military council, which took control of the country after Mubarak was deposed.

Public anger is rising at the slow pace of reforms and apparent attempts by Egypt's ruling generals to retain power over a future civilian government.

Pattinson planned premiere walk out

The actor joined his co-stars Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart to walk the black carpet at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles for the premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.

However, Pattinson told reporters he planned to leave the screening early to avoid embarrassment over the saucy scenes he filmed with Stewart.

When asked how he would react to first public showing of the footage, Pattinson told Access Hollywood, "I'll probably have left."

Fans of the vampire franchise began camping outside the venue last week (ends13Nov11) to secure their spots for the big night, and the author of the books behind the movie series, Stephenie Meyer, showed her support by handing out signed copies of her Breaking Dawn novel to devotees ahead of the premiere.

Meyer revealed she was impressed by the friendliness of fans at the campsite, gushing, "They're really kind to each other, which I love, and all very excited, and looking pretty good for having slept on the street."

The stars of the film were also amazed by the devotion of the campers, with Lautner insisting he couldn't bring himself to sleep on the street - not even for a meeting with his favourite football player, Tom Brady.

He says, "Honestly, no (I couldn't do it). The closest thing I would do it for is for my favourite sports team or my favorite athlete. I would not camp out a week. Tom Brady - you're not worth it. I'm sorry! I love you, though."

Queen Leads Tributes To Britain's War Dead

The Queen has led the nation in the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations in honour of those who have given their lives in war.

Services were held across the country to pay tribute to members of the UK's Armed Forces who have died in conflict.

After a two-minute silence at 11am, the Queen laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in London to honour the fallen.

Other senior royals also left floral tributes at the memorial, including Prince Charles and his son, the Duke of Cambridge.

Prime Minister David Cameron, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband also laid wreaths at the Cenotaph.

Thousands of ex-servicemen and women attended the traditional ceremony and later staged a march past the Cenotaph.

Forces at Camp Bastion, Britain's largest base in Afghanistan, and other military outposts across the world held their own services.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: "The public hugely respects and admires what our service people do and the professionalism with which they do it.

"We're here today to remember those who sadly have paid the ultimate price."

Lieutenant General Sir John Kiszely, the Royal British Legion's national president, said Remembrance Sunday was a time for the nation to unite in its reverence for our Armed Forces, both past and present.

"When we bow our heads in reflection, we remember those who fought for our freedom during the two World Wars, but we also mourn and honour those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts," he said.

"Today, with troops on duty in Afghanistan and other trouble spots around the world, remembrance, and the two-minute silence, are as important as ever."

On Saturday night, the Queen was joined by veterans and their families for the annual Festival of Remembrance at London's Royal Albert Hall.

X Factor star Joe McElderry, singer Katherine Jenkins and Sir Cliff Richard performed at the event, as well as a choir made up of the wives of soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

The festival concluded with a two-minute silence as thousands of poppy petals fluttered from the roof, each representing a life lost in war.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Many may think that ?Jersey Shore? star Nicole ?Snooki? Polizzi has gone under the knife, but the reality star tells Access Hollywood that her fears have always prevented her from getting a boob job.

?I actually want to get a boob job because I love Jenni?s boobs,? Snooki told Access Hollywood guest correspondent Jill Martin about her busty roommate, JWoww.

?Everyone I?ve ever known who has had boob jobs says it?s awesome!? she continued.

Instead of getting plastic surgery, the reality star offered up a natural alternative.
